Re: Gmes in the classroom

Granaas, Michael
Finally someone speaking sense: (paraphrasing because I am too lazy to quote exactly).

____
Don't believe the hype.  Game based learning is not "innovation."  Learning happens as it always has.  Technology just gives us a tool to scale great teaching.

He also emphasizes the opportunity that games provide for kids to learn via trial and error.  To be allowed to make, and learn from, mistakes.
_____

I just wish the Dragon Box app he speaks of actually had the research support he claims it does.  All I could find was the developer's claiming they had good results in preliminary testing.

Several reviewers express concern that the app teaches "how" but not "why."  I understand the concern, everywhere I look these days being able to compute something using a computer is being equated to understanding the underlying principles.  On the other hand, I wonder if those who are comfortable with algebraic manipulations from an app such allow the classroom instructor to develop the "why" with some depth.
