"how is it possible" (Spam!)

Hanno Tietgens
Hello from Hamburg,

and my apologies to all of you on the list in case you (rightfully) felt spammed by a recent post in my name. It looks as if my E-Mail account has been hacked or my address sold illegally with parts of my address book, or both.

Macs used to be immune, bit these days, it seems, are over. Any similar experience on your side, or maybe a cure? Hours of research so far have not produced any solution.

Best regards
Hanno Tietgens

(a) Macs' "immunity" was overstated at the best of times, and yes, has declined...

(b) If you email account was hacked, that was almost certainly at the server side, and your choice of client wasn't relevant.  If it was spoofed (although in that case they wouldn't have access to your contacts...), they may have sent the message through some unrelated server...

Bottom line:  Macs are generally not vulnerable to Windows viruses, and vice versa.  But those aren't the only threats around, and probably neither played a part here.

You may be reassured to know that I have not seen any recent spam in the SLED list, from you or anyone else  (although this response might count as spam for some people).  On the downside, the longstanding myth about Macs being immune is less and less believable these days.  Macs never were immune, just a small enough population compared to PCs that it wasn't worth putting the effort into hacking them.  The cure?  Change passwords frequently and don't share them, and use disposable gmail accounts for sending to lists like SLED.  ;)
